Magnesium Gummies UK: What to Look For (and Whether You Need Them)

By the GUUDIES Editorial Team · Updated 26 October 2026 · Claims checked against the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register; sources below.

Disclosure: GUUDIES makes a daily gummy pouch, but it contains no magnesium. If magnesium is what you are looking for, you will need a separate product, and this guide is about how to choose one.

The short answer: magnesium gummies can be a convenient way to top up magnesium, but because magnesium is a bulky mineral, most gummies carry a modest amount, so check the milligrams per daily serving, the % NRV and the form on the label. Adults need around 270–300mg a day, most of which can come from food, and the NHS says 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm.

What Does Magnesium Do?

Magnesium is an essential mineral found in foods such as spinach, nuts and wholemeal bread. Authorised health claims in Great Britain include that magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal psychological function and to normal muscle function. A product can only use these claims if it provides at least 15% of the 375mg NRV per daily serving, which is about 56mg.

You will often see magnesium marketed for sleep, stress or anxiety. There is no authorised magnesium claim for sleep in Great Britain, so be cautious of "sleep" promises on magnesium gummies.

How Much Magnesium Do You Need?

Group Daily amount (NHS)
Men aged 19 to 64 300mg
Women aged 19 to 64 270mg
From supplements 400mg or less a day is unlikely to cause harm

The NHS says you should be able to get the magnesium you need from a varied diet (NHS). A supplement is more likely to be worth considering if your diet is limited, you eat few wholegrains, nuts, seeds or leafy greens, or a health professional has suggested one.

What to Look For in Magnesium Gummies

  1. The amount per daily serving. Look for magnesium in mg and % NRV. If you need to take several gummies to reach a useful amount, factor in the sugar and cost.
  2. The form. Common forms include magnesium citrate, glycinate (bisglycinate), oxide and malate. Each carries a different proportion of magnesium by weight, and people tolerate them differently. A good label names the form and states the elemental magnesium, not just the weight of the compound.
  3. Sugar and sweeteners. Some gummies use sugar alcohols such as maltitol or sorbitol, which can upset the stomach in larger amounts. Check grams of sugar per gummy too.
  4. Gelatine or pectin. Pectin-based gummies suit vegetarians and vegans; gelatine ones do not.
  5. Honest claims. Claims should match the GB register wording. "Deep sleep", "calm" or "stress relief" are not authorised magnesium claims.
  6. Totals. Add up magnesium from all your supplements, including any multivitamin or electrolyte drinks, and stay at 400mg or less a day unless advised otherwise.

Magnesium Gummies vs Capsules vs Powders

Gummies Capsules or tablets Powders
Typical amount Modest per gummy; often several per serving Higher per unit Flexible; easy to adjust
Ease Chewable, no water Need swallowing Need mixing
Sugar Check per gummy Usually none Varies with flavouring
Best for People who dislike tablets Higher doses at lower cost People who like a drink

There is no single best format. The best magnesium supplement is the one that gives you a sensible amount, in a form you tolerate, that you will actually take.

Signs You Might Be Low in Magnesium

Low magnesium is uncommon in healthy people who eat a varied diet. It is more likely with long-term digestive conditions, heavy alcohol use, type 2 diabetes or certain medicines, including some diuretics and long-term acid-reducing medicines. Symptoms such as muscle cramps, tiredness or weakness have many other causes. If you are worried, ask your GP, who can arrange a blood test. Our guide to signs of magnesium deficiency goes into more detail.

Safety: Who Should Check First

  • High doses of magnesium can cause diarrhoea and stomach upset.
  • People with kidney disease should not take magnesium supplements without medical advice.
  • Magnesium can affect how some medicines are absorbed, including certain antibiotics and osteoporosis medicines. Ask your pharmacist about timing.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or take regular medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.

Where GUUDIES Fits

To be clear: GUUDIES contains no magnesium. It is one daily pouch of six pectin-based gummies for adults, and the Daily Greens+ multivitamin gummy focuses on vitamins and trace minerals such as zinc, iodine, copper and chromium (see the mineral stack). Magnesium is too bulky to fit into a gummy alongside everything else at a meaningful dose.

Daily Greens+ does include vitamin B6 (1.7mg) and B12, which contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and pantothenic acid, which contributes to normal mental performance. If you want magnesium as well, a separate magnesium product alongside GUUDIES is fine for most adults; check the totals with your pharmacist. Five of the six GUUDIES gummies are vegan; Marine Collagen contains fish.

Common Questions

Do magnesium gummies work?
They can provide magnesium, but many contain modest amounts per gummy. Check the mg and % NRV per daily serving and the form used.

How much magnesium should I take a day?
Adults need about 270 to 300mg a day, mostly from food. The NHS says 400mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm.

Which form of magnesium is best?
Citrate, glycinate, oxide and malate are all common. Choose a product that states the form and the elemental magnesium amount, and that you tolerate well.

Do magnesium gummies help you sleep?
There is no authorised health claim for magnesium and sleep in Great Britain. Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Does GUUDIES contain magnesium?
No. GUUDIES contains no magnesium, so if you want it you will need a separate supplement.
