What Is Saffron?

Saffron is the dried red stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower, a small autumn flowering crocus that's been cultivated in Iran, Spain and parts of the Mediterranean for thousands of years. It's the most expensive spice in the world by weight because each flower only produces three tiny stigmas, and harvesting is done entirely by hand.

Beyond its culinary use, saffron has a long traditional medicinal history. Persian, Greek and Ayurvedic systems all used it for mood, digestion and as a general tonic. Modern research has now confirmed several of these traditional uses, particularly for mood support and emotional eating behaviour. The active compounds responsible are crocins, crocetin and safranal, all concentrated in the red stigmas.

Saffron is unusual among botanicals because the clinical evidence is genuinely strong. Multiple randomised controlled trials and at least one meta analysis have looked at saffron for mood support, and the results have been positive enough that saffron has been compared favourably to some prescription mood medications in head to head trials. The effect size is modest but consistent.

The other interesting research is around satiety and emotional eating. Several trials have shown saffron may help reduce snacking and emotional eating patterns, which is the mechanism most metabolism supplements try to hit but rarely do successfully.

Daily Greens+ delivers 90mg of saffron extract inside the Metabolic gummy, which is one of six in your daily GUUDIES mini pouch.

30mg Typical dose in clinical research

Most randomised trials on saffron use 30mg daily, the dose at which mood and satiety effects have been most consistently shown. Our 90mg dose sits comfortably within the studied safe range.

150kg Of crocus flowers per kilo of saffron

It takes roughly 150,000 hand picked Crocus sativus flowers to produce one kilo of saffron. This is why saffron is the most expensive spice in the world, and why the extract form is what's used in supplements.

Mood Saffron's most researched property

Multiple meta analyses have looked at saffron for mood support. The evidence is strong enough that it's been compared favourably to some prescription mood medications in clinical trials, with significantly fewer side effects.

What Saffron Actually Does

Saffron's effects are real but they're not dramatic. Studies typically show meaningful differences at 4 to 8 weeks of consistent daily use. The mood and satiety effects are subtle enough that you might not notice them until you stop and realise the constant snacking has faded, or that your baseline mood has shifted up half a notch.

If you're on prescription mood medication, particularly SSRIs, talk to your GP before starting saffron. The interaction is generally well tolerated but worth knowing about.

Mood Emotional wellbeing support

Saffron's most researched benefit. The active compounds (crocins and safranal) appear to affect serotonin and dopamine pathways, which is part of why saffron has been studied as a natural mood support across multiple clinical trials.

Satiety Reduced emotional eating

Saffron has been studied for its effects on snacking behaviour and emotional eating. The proposed mechanism links back to the mood effects, since much of what we call overeating is actually emotional regulation through food.

Sleep Some evidence for sleep quality

Emerging research suggests saffron may have mild effects on sleep quality and duration. Effects are subtle, but useful to know about if you're taking it primarily for other reasons.

Antioxidant Crocins protect cells from oxidative stress

The same crocins that give saffron its colour are potent antioxidants. They contribute to cellular protection alongside the better known mood and satiety effects.

Saffron Questions

What people ask before they try it.

How much saffron is in each serving?

90mg of saffron extract (Crocus sativus). That's inside the Metabolic gummy, which is one of six gummies in your daily GUUDIES mini pouch.

Is saffron actually backed by research?

More than most botanicals you'll see in a supplement. Multiple randomised controlled trials and meta analyses support saffron's effects on mood and emotional eating. The evidence base is genuinely strong by botanical standards, particularly compared to most ingredients in the wellness category.

Will it interact with antidepressants?

If you're on prescription SSRIs or other mood medications, check with your GP before adding saffron. The combination is generally considered safe but worth flagging because saffron has mild mood effects of its own.

How long until I notice anything?

Saffron's effects typically build over 4 to 8 weeks of consistent daily use. Some people notice mild mood improvements sooner, others take longer. The most reliable predictor is consistency rather than dose.
