Blood orange is a sub category of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) with a distinctive deep red pulp, the result of unusually high levels of anthocyanins. These are the same plant pigments that make blueberries blue, red cabbage red and pomegranates red. In citrus, anthocyanins only form in specific conditions, and the most studied blood oranges are the Sicilian varieties (Moro, Tarocco and Sanguinello) grown around Mount Etna.
Beyond the colour, blood oranges have become genuinely interesting from a research angle. Anthocyanins have been studied for years for their effects on vascular function, metabolic markers and antioxidant activity. The research on blood orange specifically has grown substantially over the past two decades, with a few notable studies looking at blood orange juice or extract effects on lipid profiles, body weight markers and oxidative stress.
One reason blood orange has earned its place in the Metabolic gummy is mechanism diversity. Anthocyanins work through different pathways than saffron (mood and satiety) and eriocitrin (antioxidant and lipid metabolism). The three together cover more ground than any single botanical would alone.
The other reason is the strength of the underlying research compared to most metabolism category ingredients. While the green tea extract in a typical metabolism supplement often sits below clinical dose levels, the blood orange research has been done at doses that match real world supplementation, including the 200mg level used in this gummy.
