Vegan Gummy Vitamins UK: What to Look For and What Most Brands Get Wrong

The vegan supplement market in the UK has grown significantly alongside plant-based diets. But not all supplements marketed at vegans are what they appear. And not all supplement brands are transparent about which of their products are vegan and which are not. Here is how to read a supplement label properly if you are plant-based.

The Gelatine Problem

Traditional gummies use gelatine as their base, which is derived from animal collagen, typically porcine or bovine. Most gummies on UK supermarket shelves are not vegan for this reason alone. A genuinely vegan gummy uses pectin instead, a plant-derived setting agent made from fruit skins. This produces a slightly different texture but is functionally equivalent as a delivery vehicle for nutrients.

Always check the base ingredient. A product can contain entirely plant-derived vitamins and minerals but still not be vegan if the gummy base uses gelatine. This is a common oversight.

Not All Supplements From a Brand Are Vegan

This is the most important thing vegan supplement buyers need to understand. A brand can offer a range of products where most are vegan but one or two are not. Marine collagen, for example, is derived from fish skin and is not vegan. A supplement brand that is largely plant-based may still sell a collagen product that is not suitable for vegans. Check each product individually rather than assuming a brand's entire range shares the same status.

What Nutrients Vegans Specifically Need

B12 is the most critical. It is found almost exclusively in animal products and deficiency among vegans is well documented. Vitamin D3 from animal sources is more bioavailable than D2 from plant sources, so look for vegan D3 derived from lichen rather than ergocalciferol. Iodine is commonly obtained from dairy in omnivore diets and is frequently insufficient in vegan diets. Omega-3 from algae provides DHA and EPA without fish. Iron requirements are higher for vegans due to lower bioavailability of non-haem iron from plants.

What a Good Vegan Gummy Vitamin Actually Looks Like

Pectin base, not gelatine. Every ingredient dose declared individually in milligrams or micrograms. A vegan certification or clear label statement. Bioavailable nutrient forms methylcobalamin for B12, cholecalciferol for D3, not the cheapest available versions. Low sugar without sugar alcohols.
