Disclosure: GUUDIES makes a daily gummy pouch that includes some of the nutrients below. We say where our product fits and where it does not.
The short answer: a handful of nutrients have officially authorised links to hair, skin and nails in Great Britain: biotin, zinc, selenium, copper, vitamin A, niacin and vitamin C (through collagen formation). Hair, skin and nails vitamins and gummies help most when your diet is falling short of these, and any change takes around three months to show because hair and nails grow slowly.
What Are Hair, Skin and Nails Vitamins?
They are supplements, usually gummies, tablets or capsules, that combine nutrients linked to the tissues you can see. Hair and nails are made mainly of the protein keratin, and the deeper layer of skin relies on collagen for its structure. A few vitamins and minerals are involved in keeping those tissues normal, which is why brands bundle them together.
Which Nutrients Have Authorised Claims?
In Great Britain, a supplement can only make a health claim that is on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register. These are the ones that relate to hair, skin and nails:
| Nutrient | What it is authorised to say | Adult NRV |
|---|---|---|
| Biotin (B7) | Contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin | 50µg |
| Zinc | Contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, normal nails and normal skin | 10mg |
| Selenium | Contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal nails | 55µg |
| Copper | Contributes to normal hair pigmentation and normal skin pigmentation | 1mg |
| Vitamin C | Contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin | 80mg |
| Vitamin A | Contributes to the maintenance of normal skin | 800µg |
| Niacin (B3) | Contributes to the maintenance of normal skin | 16mg |
Collagen itself has no authorised health claim in Great Britain. It is a popular ingredient and there is ongoing research on collagen peptides and skin, but a UK label cannot claim it improves skin, hair or nails.
Do Hair, Skin and Nails Gummies Work?
They can play a part, with realistic expectations. If your diet is low in one of the nutrients above, topping it up supports the normal maintenance of hair, skin or nails. If you already get enough, extra is unlikely to make a visible difference. The NHS notes, for example, that most people should be able to get all the biotin they need from a varied and balanced diet.
Hair shedding and brittle nails also have causes no supplement fixes, including iron deficiency, thyroid problems, hormonal changes, stress and some medicines. If you notice sudden or patchy hair loss, the NHS advises seeing a GP.
How Long Do Hair, Skin and Nails Vitamins Take?
Plan on about three months of daily use before judging any product. Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month and fingernails grow more slowly, so new growth takes time to become visible. Consistency matters more than the time of day you take them.
Are They Safe? Limits and Side Effects
- Biotin: the NHS says taking 0.9mg (900µg) a day or less from supplements is unlikely to cause harm. High-dose biotin can interfere with some blood tests, including thyroid and heart tests, so tell your doctor or the lab if you take it.
- Zinc: the NHS advises not taking more than 25mg a day from supplements unless a doctor recommends it. Long-term high doses can lower copper levels.
- Selenium: the NHS advises 350µg a day or less from supplements.
- Vitamin A: if you are pregnant or could become pregnant, avoid supplements containing vitamin A (retinol) unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Check whether you take more than one product. Doubling up on a multivitamin and a hair gummy can push some nutrients higher than you meant.
How to Read a Hair, Skin and Nails Label
- Find the amount and %NRV for each nutrient. A proprietary blend with no individual amounts tells you very little.
- Check the daily serving. Some gummies need two to four a day to reach the amounts on the front of the pack.
- Check the base. Many gummies are made with gelatine (from pigs or cows); pectin-based gummies are plant based.
- Check the sugar. Look at sugar per serving, especially for something you take every day.
- Look for claims you can check. Wording such as "contributes to the maintenance of normal hair" is the authorised kind. Promises of faster growth or thicker hair are not authorised claims.

*Calculated from the 14mg amount against the 16mg adult NRV.
Our pouch is a broad daily routine rather than a hair-only formula. It gives full-NRV amounts of biotin and vitamins A and C, most of the NRV for niacin, but lower amounts of zinc and copper, and no selenium, so if a hair-focused formula with selenium is what you want, a dedicated hair supplement may suit you better. The biotin and collagen come in the Marine Collagen gummy, which contains fish and is not vegan; the other five gummies in the pouch are vegan. All six are pectin based, with about 0.4g of sugar per gummy.
Common Questions
Do hair, skin and nails gummies actually work?
They can support normal hair, skin and nails if they supply nutrients you are short of, such as biotin, zinc or selenium. If your diet already covers them, extra is unlikely to show. Give any product about three months.
What is the best vitamin for hair, skin and nails?
No single one. Biotin, zinc and selenium have authorised hair claims, zinc and selenium also cover nails, and vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. Look for sensible amounts of each rather than a long ingredient list.
Do hair, skin and nails gummies have side effects?
Taken as directed, most people tolerate them well. High-dose biotin can affect blood test results, and vitamin A should be avoided in pregnancy unless your doctor advises it. Some gummies contain sugar alcohols that can upset the stomach in large amounts.
Are hair vitamins gummies better than tablets?
Not by nature. A gummy is easier to take every day, which helps consistency, but tablets often fit more of each nutrient. Compare the amounts and %NRV per daily serving.
Are hair, skin and nails gummies worth it?
They are worth considering if your diet is limited, for example if you eat little meat, fish, eggs or nuts. If you are losing hair suddenly, see a GP first.
