Do Collagen Gummies Work? What the Evidence Really Shows (UK)
Do collagen gummies work? What the skin trials actually used, why gummies hold far less collagen, what the latest independent evidence says, and how to choose a collagen gummy in the UK.
By the GUUDIES Editorial Team · Updated 26 October 2026 · Health claims checked against the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register (sources below).
Disclosure: GUUDIES makes a marine collagen gummy as part of its daily pouch, so we have an interest here. We have kept to what the evidence says, including the parts that do not flatter collagen gummies, and linked our sources.
Do collagen gummies work? The honest answer is: not in the way most adverts suggest. Trials showing better skin hydration and elasticity used 2.5g to 10g of collagen peptides a day, while most gummies give 100mg to 500mg. The evidence itself is also mixed, with the strongest results coming from industry-funded studies. Collagen has no authorised health claim in the UK, so treat a collagen gummy as an easy extra in a routine, not a skin treatment.
What Collagen Is and Why It Declines
Collagen is the main structural protein in skin, tendon, bone and connective tissue (NCBI StatPearls). In skin it sits in the dermis, the layer under the surface, where it gives firmness and helps hold water. Production slows with age, and UV exposure, smoking and high blood sugar speed up its breakdown. The NHS points to sun protection and not smoking as the most effective ways to protect skin.
How Collagen Supplements Are Meant to Work
Whole collagen is too large to absorb, so supplements use hydrolysed collagen: collagen broken into short peptides. Some of these peptides reach the bloodstream intact. The theory is that they supply building blocks such as glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, and may signal skin cells called fibroblasts to make more collagen. This has been shown in lab and animal studies; how much it matters at real-world doses in people is still being worked out.
What the Research Says
Studies that found a benefit
- A 2014 trial in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology gave women aged 35 to 55 either 2.5g or 5g of collagen peptides a day for eight weeks and found improved skin elasticity compared with placebo.
- A 2021 meta-analysis in the International Journal of Dermatology pooled 19 trials (1,125 people) and reported improvements in skin hydration and elasticity after around 90 days.
Studies that urge caution
- A 2025 meta-analysis of 23 randomised trials, published in The American Journal of Medicine, found that the benefits largely disappeared when the analysis was limited to higher-quality studies and to studies not funded by industry. (Coverage and industry response.)
- Most positive trials were small, short and sponsored by collagen manufacturers.
Put simply: there is some evidence that gram-level doses of collagen peptides help skin hydration and elasticity, but it is not settled, and the best-designed independent studies show little effect.
Do Collagen Gummies Contain Enough Collagen?
| Format | Typical collagen per serving | Compared with trial doses (2.5g–10g) |
|---|---|---|
| Collagen powder | 5g–10g | Matches the trials |
| Collagen capsules | 0.5g–2g (several capsules) | Usually below |
| Collagen gummies | 100mg–500mg | Well below |
| Collagen drinks/shots | 2.5g–10g | Often matches |
A gummy simply cannot hold several grams of collagen and still be a gummy. If a high collagen dose is your goal, a powder or drink is the practical choice. Be wary of any gummy that quotes trial results from studies using ten or twenty times its dose.
What Collagen Gummies Can Offer
Many collagen gummies add vitamins that do have authorised UK claims:
- Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin.
- Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin.
- Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, nails and skin.
These claims belong to the vitamins and minerals, not to collagen itself. A gummy that declares meaningful amounts of them is doing something you can check on the label.
How Long Do Collagen Supplements Take?
In the trials, changes in skin hydration and elasticity were measured after 8 to 12 weeks of daily use at gram-level doses. There is no good evidence on timelines for gummy-level doses. Be sceptical of claims of visible results in days.
Marine or Bovine Collagen?
Marine collagen comes from fish skin or scales and is mostly Type I, the main type in skin. Bovine collagen comes from cow hide or bone and provides Types I and III. Neither has been shown to be clearly better for skin in head-to-head human trials. Marine suits pescatarians; neither is vegan. See our marine vs bovine collagen guide.
How to Choose a Collagen Gummy
- Collagen amount stated in milligrams per serving, and "hydrolysed" on the label.
- Source named (marine or bovine), and the allergen in bold if it is fish.
- Vitamin C, biotin or zinc declared with % NRV, if you want claims you can rely on.
- Sugar per gummy; under 1g is a sensible target.
- Honest marketing: no promises of reversing ageing or removing wrinkles. Those are not authorised claims.
Who Should Avoid Collagen Supplements?
Anyone with a fish allergy should avoid marine collagen. Collagen is never vegan, and products sold as "vegan collagen" contain nutrients involved in collagen formation, not collagen. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, check with your GP first.
Where GUUDIES Fits
The GUUDIES Marine Collagen gummy contains 200mg of hydrolysed Type I and III marine collagen peptides with 100µg of biotin. That collagen dose is well below the amounts used in skin trials, and we say so. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin. The Daily Greens+ gummy in the same pouch adds 80mg of vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, plus zinc.
The Marine Collagen gummy contains fish and is not vegan; the other five gummies in the pouch are vegan. See what is in a GUUDIES pouch.
Common Questions
Do collagen gummies actually work?
The skin trials used 2.5g to 10g of collagen peptides a day, far more than a gummy holds, and the evidence is mixed. Collagen gummies are best seen as a convenient extra, not a proven skin treatment.
What are the benefits of collagen gummies?
Collagen itself has no authorised health claim in the UK. Many gummies add vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, and biotin, which contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and skin.
How long do collagen gummies take to work?
Trials measured changes after 8 to 12 weeks at gram-level doses. There is no good evidence on timelines for gummy doses.
Are collagen gummies better than powder?
No, not for collagen dose. A powder gives several grams per serving; a gummy gives milligrams. Gummies are easier to keep taking.
Is marine collagen better than bovine?
Neither has been shown to be clearly better for skin in head-to-head human trials. Marine suits pescatarians but contains fish.
Are collagen gummies vegan?
No. Collagen always comes from animals. "Vegan collagen" products contain nutrients involved in collagen formation, not collagen.
