Bioavailability: Do Gummies, Powders or Capsules Absorb Best?
Bioavailability is the percentage of a nutrient that reaches the bloodstream in a usable form after consumption. It is one of the most cited concepts in supplement marketing and one of the most frequently misrepresented. Here is what the science actually shows about how different formats compare.
What Determines Bioavailability
Bioavailability is primarily determined by the chemical form of the nutrient, not the delivery format. Methylcobalamin B12 is more bioavailable than cyanocobalamin whether it comes in a powder, capsule or gummy. Magnesium glycinate is better absorbed than magnesium oxide in any format. The form listed on the ingredient panel tells you more about likely absorption than the format the product comes in.
Delivery format does have an effect, but it is secondary to nutrient form. Gummies begin dissolving in saliva, initiating absorption earlier in the digestive process. This provides a modest advantage over tablets and capsules that rely entirely on stomach acid dissolution. Powders dissolved in liquid are already partially dispersed before consumption, which can speed absorption for some nutrients.
The Research on Format Comparisons
Direct comparisons between formats for the same nutrient show relatively small differences. A study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found no significant difference in Vitamin D absorption between gummy and tablet formats. Research on B vitamins, Vitamin C and zinc across formats reaches similar conclusions: for nutrients at standard daily doses, format differences in bioavailability are modest and often within the margin of measurement error.
Where larger format differences emerge is in people with compromised digestive function. Lower stomach acid, which becomes more common with age, reduces the dissolution efficiency of tablets and capsules. Gummies, which dissolve partially in saliva, and powders pre-dissolved in liquid, both sidestep this limitation to some degree.
Why We Think Format Is a Compliance Decision First
Optimal bioavailability means nothing if the product stays in the drawer. The real-world effectiveness of any supplement is dose times absorption rate times how often you actually take it. A gummy you enjoy taking every morning beats a high-absorption capsule you forget half the time, every time.
